Bakura's Bio
"A lunatic may be 'soothed,' as it is called, for a time. But in the end, he is apt to become obstreperous. His cunning too is proverbial and great. If he has a project in view, he conceals his design with a marvelous wisdom; and the dexterity with which he counterfeits sanity presents to the metaphysician one of the most singular problems in the study of the mind.
When a madman appears to be thoroughly sane, indeed, it is high time to put him in a straightjacket."
-E.A. Poe "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether"
:: Why Only One Bio? ::
Okay, I don't do two separate bios for Ryou and Bakura b/c really they are one person (sort of) and that's the way I think of them. Which is in itself a contradiction, (the them part). Sorry if it's confusing. And I like Bakura better so I tend to focus on him (sorry Ryou), except it switches back and forth several times. Actually don't think about it to much, it'll make your head hurt. Just stare at your computer screen really hard for a long time. Then you'll understand everything
Ryou Bakura is a new transfer student to Domino High School at the beginning of the dub. He is British, as you can tell from his accent and is bilingual. Since he is attending a Japanese school, in Japan, and in the original Japanese version must have spoke Japanese, this can be assumed. He is a quiet boy of around 16 and never really joins in with the rest of the group. On the island, Tea keeps catching glimpses of him, but the first time he appears, it is the evil spirit [Bakura] who posses his body and ends up taking everyone to the Shadow Realm with the Millennium item Bakura possesses, the Millennium [or Sennen] Ring. Ryou then back to normal stays with the rest of the group. He still is quiet and mysterious and hangs around in the background, providing support and details about Yugi's duels.
When the group is in Pegasus' castle for the final duel of souls, the spirit once again takes over. Bakura tries to kidnap Mokuba's body...apparently he is tired of staying in Ryou's body and wants a new host. Honda throws the Ring over a cliff and it seems Ryou is back to normal. The spirit is still in his body though. The ring is gotten back eventually. He then goes on to take Pegasus' Millennium Eye in his quest to gain all the Millennium items. The spirit was after all originally a tomb robber in Ancient Egypt. After Malik starts appearing, and Yugi's puzzle is messed with, the spirit puts part of his soul into the last piece of Yugi's puzzle which he finds and then oh so innocently offers back to Yugi. This is the last he is seen of until Battle City.
Ryou is as good of a duelist as Yugi. He remains calm at all times of the duel (not an easy thing to do), showing his mastery. During duels it is Ryou who points out strategies that Yugi uses, when other characters or the viewer might not understand what is going on, or thinks Yugi made a stupid mistake.
In Battle City the spirit meets up with Malik. They make an evil double duo, only working together until one of them can kill the other. The partnership exists only for one reason. Malik wants Yugi dead and Bakura wants his puzzle. They both wouldn't mind seeing the Pharaoh disposed of either. Unfortunately Malik later kicks Bakura's butt in a duel and destroys him totally (not to worry, he returns after Yami Malik-that TOTALLY evil dude- is defeated). Poor Ryou is caught in the middle. Bakura once tells Yami that he wouldn't let Ryou be harmed, but not because of any kindness in his heart. he is a practical soul, who needs an undamaged body to inhabit. Why he can not split off from Ryou, as Yami can from Yugi is not explained.
Bakura uses an occult deck in the true version, not a wimpy deck made up of a few 'good' cards. he's not a 'fairies and angels and sugar plum fairies' type of guy. His deck is made up of some truly horrible and nasty monsters like Headless Knight, Possessed Painting, and Earthbound Spirit. Mainly he uses Dark Necrophelia which he uses in combo with the Ouiji Board of DEATH
Bakura's one bad boy
Bakura has a major thing for blood...and occasionally self-mutilation. This can be seen in his obsession for blood. This is both meant literally and physically....he is often shown licking blood (including licking it off the Millennium Eye after he ripped it out of Pegasus' eye socket), eating meat...etc. Also he apparently enjoys inflicting pain. Not just on others however, but also on himself. He is often depicted in the manga stabbing/hurting himself. We can assume that when Ryou has his body back, he does not appreciate this.
Bakura was a
excellent thief back there in ancient Egypt. He was not exactly a really
bad person by nature, but hatred changed him into a rather evil guy who only
wants revenge on the Pharaoh, not caring what happens to those he might use to
achieve his ends.
Name Analysis
[This seems VERY appropriate]
RYOU
The name of Ryou gives him a very idealistic nature. His desire for peace and harmony causes him to withdraw from situations where there is friction and acrimony. He is quite reserved and inclined to feel sensitive and self-conscious, even though he strives to appear poised and confident. Being rather secretive in many ways, and not liking people to pry into his affairs restricts opportunities for friendship; not until he feels he can trust others does he open up to them. The desire to help others and the generous side of his nature attract those who take advantage of him. He lacks the necessary aggressiveness for business success. While he lacks verbal expression and spontaneity under this name, he has a natural literary ability and writing comes easily to him. He also has a deep appreciation of nature and all the finer things in life. Weaknesses in the health arising from the use of this name affect the respiratory organs, and the nervous system.
BAKURA
The name of Bakura gives him a very inquisitive, restless, seeking nature. He feels impelled by intense desires that he cannot comprehend or satisfy. He has had the desire to accomplish something outstanding and to do something very worthwhile for humanity, especially early in his life. This name gives him a versatile, clever, analytical mind, but unfortunately he cannot direct his interest toward an undertaking for long, as he does not have the patience and practicality for systematic hard work and attention to detail. He resents obstacles, delays, and restrictions. This name gives him ambition, high ideals, and much creative ability, but the intense dynamic nature is too often spent in feelings and in moods, rather than in constructive action. He desires to be his own boss, yet he finds it difficult to stabilize his life and to settle down and be accumulative. His feelings swing from optimism to pessimism. He can be very cynical and caustic, and he subjects those around him to outbursts of temper and moods of self-pity. His home-life particularly would suffer. This name has given him an appreciation for refinement, and the better things in life such as art, music, and literature. He can express a very friendly, debonair personality to strangers which invariably makes a very favorable impression. It has been his experience that once he loses control to indulgent habits, for example, smoking, drinking, or emotional outbursts, it is very difficult to retain control. He would be affected in the health through a sensitive solar plexus and nervous system. Nervous disorders, nervous indigestion, and stomach ulcers could develop.
::BAKURA:: The
world is my perception. Cogito ergo sum. We are our actions. The action of
thinking, being, perceiving. I perceive I am thinking, and therefore the world
exists in my image, and only mine. A god of a world no one else sees.
